Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears)
Perception of sound in the ear or head without an external source; may present as ringing, buzzing or hissing.
Tinnitus can originate from hearing loss, noise exposure, ototoxic drugs, Meniere's disease or temporomandibular joint disorder. Pulsatile tinnitus suggests a vascular cause.
Treatment is directed at the underlying cause. Sound therapy, CBT (cognitive-behavioural therapy), tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) and hearing aids are used to manage symptoms. Complete resolution is not always possible.
