BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)
Brief episodes of vertigo triggered by head position changes, caused by displaced otoconia crystals entering the semicircular canals.
BPPV is the most common cause of peripheral vertigo. The posterior semicircular canal is the most frequently affected. The Dix-Hallpike manoeuvre is the diagnostic gold standard.
The Epley repositioning manoeuvre returns displaced crystals to their correct canal position; 80% success in a single session is reported. Drug therapy is usually unnecessary; spontaneous resolution within a few weeks is also possible.
