Hearing Loss
Reduced ability to hear sounds; classified as conductive, sensorineural or mixed type.
Conductive hearing loss results from external or middle ear pathology (cerumen impaction, otitis media, otosclerosis). Sensorineural hearing loss reflects cochlear or retrocochlear damage caused by ageing (presbycusis), noise exposure or ototoxicity.
Hearing assessment begins with pure-tone audiometry and tympanometry. Treatment depends on the cause: surgery (otosclerosis, middle ear disease), hearing aid or cochlear implant.
