Otosclerosis
Conductive hearing loss caused by abnormal bone remodelling that immobilises the stapes (stirrup bone) in the middle ear.
Otosclerosis is an autosomal dominant condition, often bilateral, presenting in young adults. The characteristic finding is conductive loss more pronounced at low frequencies even in quiet environments (Carhart notch).
Stapedectomy or stapedotomy is the surgical treatment; the immobile stapes is removed and replaced with a prosthesis. Success rates are high; hearing improvement above 90% is reported.
