Goitre
Abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland; may be diffuse or nodular and can present with difficulty swallowing or a sensation of fullness in the neck.
Iodine deficiency is the most common cause worldwide; autoimmune conditions, nodules and rarely cancer can also cause goitre. Thyroid function may be normal, low or high.
Small goitres may require observation only. Surgery is considered when the gland enlarges, causes compressive symptoms (difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, hoarseness) or a suspicious nodule is present.
