Hypothyroidism
A condition in which the thyroid gland produces insufficient hormones; presents with fatigue, weight gain and cold intolerance.
The most common causes are Hashimoto's thyroiditis and post-thyroidectomy state. TSH is elevated and free T4 is low. Fatigue, constipation, dry skin, hair loss and depression are the main complaints.
Treatment is daily oral levothyroxine replacement. Dose is adjusted to achieve the target TSH; lifelong use is required in most patients. Untreated severe hypothyroidism can lead to myxoedema coma.
