Thyroidectomy
Surgical removal of all (total thyroidectomy) or part (partial/lobectomy) of the thyroid gland.
Thyroid cancer, large goitre, hyperthyroidism or nodules causing compressive symptoms are the main indications. Preserving the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands during surgery is critical.
Lifelong levothyroxine replacement is required after total thyroidectomy. Complications include hoarseness (RLN injury) and hypocalcaemia (parathyroid injury); risks are low in experienced hands.
