Thyroid Nodule
An abnormal growth of tissue within the thyroid gland, most often benign; evaluation with ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration when indicated.
Thyroid nodules are found in 50–60% of the adult population; the vast majority are benign. Risk factors include neck radiation history, family history and female sex.
Ultrasound findings are assessed using TIRADS classification; fine-needle aspiration biopsy is performed for nodules over 1 cm with suspicious features. The Bethesda system standardises biopsy result categories.
