Hyperthyroidism
A condition in which the thyroid gland produces excess hormones (T3/T4), accelerating metabolism and causing various systemic symptoms.
Graves' disease, toxic adenomas and toxic multinodular goitre are the main causes. Symptoms include palpitations, weight loss, nervousness, heat intolerance, excessive sweating and tremor.
Diagnosis is made with TSH, free T4 and thyroid scintigraphy when needed. Treatment options include antithyroid drugs (methimazole, propylthiouracil), radioactive iodine or surgery.
