Radioactive Iodine (RAI) Therapy
A treatment using the I-131 isotope that selectively destroys thyroid tissue; used for hyperthyroidism or as adjuvant therapy after thyroid cancer surgery.
The thyroid gland selectively concentrates iodine; radioactive I-131 exploits this property to affect only thyroid tissue. It is used to ablate gland function in hyperthyroidism and to destroy residual tissue after cancer surgery.
Levothyroxine is discontinued before treatment to raise TSH levels; recombinant TSH injection can also be used for stimulation. It is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
