Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma
The most common type of thyroid cancer; generally carries a good prognosis and is managed with surgery and radioactive iodine when indicated.
Papillary carcinoma accounts for approximately 80% of all thyroid cancers. It grows slowly and can spread to lymph nodes, but distant metastasis is rare. Five-year survival exceeds 95%.
Standard treatment is total thyroidectomy; neck dissection is added if lymph node involvement is confirmed. Radioactive iodine ablation is used in high-risk cases to destroy residual thyroid tissue.
