Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
An autoimmune condition in which the immune system produces antibodies against the thyroid gland; the most common cause of hypothyroidism.
In Hashimoto's thyroiditis, anti-TPO and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies are elevated. The gland gradually atrophies and hormone production declines; fatigue, weight gain and cold intolerance are the main symptoms.
Treatment is usually levothyroxine replacement; there is no definitive cure for the disease itself. Nodule development should be monitored and the risk of thyroid lymphoma kept in mind.
