Graves' Disease
An autoimmune hyperthyroidism caused by stimulating antibodies against TSH receptors; may be associated with exophthalmos.
Graves' disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Palpitations, weight loss, tremor, heat intolerance and exophthalmos are the main findings. TSH is suppressed; free T4 and T3 are elevated.
Treatment options are antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine ablation and surgical thyroidectomy. Surgery is preferred when a large goitre, suspicious nodule or drug intolerance is present.
