Neck Dissection
Surgical removal of cervical lymph node groups to treat or stage lymph node metastasis in head and neck cancers.
There are three main types: radical, modified radical and selective neck dissection. In selective dissection, only at-risk lymph node levels are removed; the spinal accessory nerve, internal jugular vein and sternocleidomastoid muscle are preserved.
Neck dissection can be performed simultaneously with primary tumour resection or planned before radiotherapy. Functional and aesthetic morbidity is minimised with refined surgical techniques.
