Laryngeal Cancer
Malignant tumour arising from the laryngeal tissue; a head and neck cancer type in which smoking and alcohol are the most important risk factors.
Laryngeal cancer is classified according to the glottic (vocal cord), supraglottic and subglottic regions. Glottic tumours cause hoarseness early and are therefore often detected at an early stage.
Treatment depends on tumour size, location and lymph node status: early-stage organ-preservation radiotherapy or partial laryngectomy; advanced disease requires total laryngectomy with neck dissection.
