Allergic Rhinitis
IgE-mediated inflammation of the nasal mucosa triggered by allergen exposure; may be seasonal or perennial.
Pollen, house dust mites, mould spores and pet dander are the main triggers. Symptoms include nasal discharge, sneezing, itching and congestion. Eye symptoms (allergic conjunctivitis) may coexist.
Treatment is stepwise: allergen avoidance, saline irrigation, antihistamines, topical corticosteroid sprays, and subcutaneous or sublingual immunotherapy in advanced cases.
