Sinusitis
Inflammation of the paranasal sinuses; classified as acute (under 4 weeks), subacute or chronic (over 12 weeks).
Viral upper respiratory infections are the most common cause of acute sinusitis. Bacterial biofilm, allergy, anatomical variants and immunosuppression may contribute to chronic sinusitis.
Diagnosis is based on clinical findings and endoscopy; CT sinus imaging reveals anatomical detail in chronic cases. Treatment includes saline irrigation, topical steroids and antibiotics when indicated; refractory cases are treated with FESS.
