Chronic Rhinitis
Chronic inflammation or dysfunction of the nasal mucosa lasting more than 12 weeks; includes allergic and non-allergic forms.
Allergic rhinitis is IgE-mediated, while non-allergic rhinitis develops through mechanisms such as autonomic nerve dysfunction, hormonal changes or irritants. Atrophic rhinitis is characterised by crusting and offensive odour.
Treatment depends on the cause: topical steroids, antihistamines, nasal irrigation and immunotherapy are effective in the allergic form. Turbinoplasty is considered when turbinate hypertrophy is present.
