Hypoparathyroidism
Insufficient PTH secretion from the parathyroid glands causing low blood calcium; an important complication of thyroidectomy.
Damage to or devascularisation of the parathyroid glands during thyroidectomy causes hypocalcaemia. Numbness, tingling, muscle cramps and, in severe cases, tetany are the main symptoms.
Mild transient hypocalcaemia is managed with calcium and vitamin D supplementation. Permanent hypoparathyroidism requires long-term oral calcium, active vitamin D or recombinant PTH therapy.
