Hypopharyngeal Cancer
An aggressive head and neck cancer arising from the hypopharynx between the larynx and oesophagus, often diagnosed at an advanced stage.
Tobacco and alcohol are the most important risk factors. Difficulty swallowing, pain referred to the ear and a neck mass are common presenting complaints. Diagnostic delay means most cases are detected at an advanced stage.
Treatment consists of organ-preservation chemoradiotherapy or surgery comprising pharyngolaryngectomy and neck dissection. Multidisciplinary tumour board decision standardises treatment selection.
