Dysphonia (Voice Disorder)
Deviation from the normal quality, pitch or loudness of the voice; dysphonia lasting more than 2 weeks requires laryngoscopic evaluation.
Acute dysphonia is most often due to viral laryngitis and resolves within days. Chronic dysphonia may be caused by serious conditions such as vocal cord nodules, polyps, paralysis, laryngeal cancer or reflux laryngitis.
Flexible fibreoptic laryngoscopy or videostroboscopy dynamically evaluates the vocal cords. Treatment depends on the cause: voice therapy, surgery (microlaryngoscopy) or medical management.
