Labyrinthitis
Inflammation of the inner ear labyrinth; presents with acute-onset severe vertigo, nausea and hearing loss.
Viral labyrinthitis is the most common form and typically occurs 1–2 weeks after an upper respiratory infection. Bacterial labyrinthitis is seen as a complication of chronic otitis media or meningitis.
Treatment involves symptomatic support (vestibular suppressants, antiemetics), systemic corticosteroids and antivirals when indicated. Vestibular rehabilitation accelerates compensation.
