Epistaxis (Nosebleed)
Bleeding from the nasal mucosa; 90% originates from the anterior area at the Kiesselbach plexus.
Dry air, trauma, anticoagulant use and hypertension are common causes. Most anterior bleeds are controlled by nasal pressure or chemical cauterisation. Posterior bleeding is more serious and may require hospitalisation.
In recurrent epistaxis, treating the underlying cause (moisturising and topical steroids for allergic rhinitis, blood pressure control for hypertension) prevents long-term recurrences.
