Lymphoid tissue on each side of the throat; surgery may be needed in cases of recurrent tonsillitis or hypertrophy causing obstruction.
Recurrent acute tonsillitis (seven or more episodes per year), peritonsillar abscess and obstructive hypertrophy are indications for tonsillectomy. The "Paradise criteria" help identify which patients benefit from surgery.
Pain after tonsillectomy lasts 7–10 days; bleeding risk is highest in the first 24 hours and days 5–10. Adequate hydration and cold foods support recovery.
