Adenoid
A mass of lymphoid tissue in the nasopharynx that, when enlarged, can cause nasal obstruction, sleep apnoea and recurrent ear infections.
Adenoids may enlarge especially between ages 3–7 in children. Mouth breathing, nocturnal snoring, hyponasal speech and recurrent otitis media are the main symptoms.
Adenoidectomy is performed for large, symptomatic adenoids, often combined with tonsillectomy. The procedure is usually completed under general anaesthesia in 20–30 minutes.
