Functional Rhinoplasty in Istanbul: Breathing Better and Looking Natural
Functional rhinoplasty addresses both breathing problems and aesthetic concerns in a single surgical procedure. Istanbul's specialist surgeons combine septal correction and inferior turbinate reduction to deliver lasting, natural-looking results for international patients.

What is functional rhinoplasty in Istanbul and how is it performed?
Functional rhinoplasty is an ENT surgical approach that corrects airway obstruction (deviated septum, inferior turbinate hypertrophy) simultaneously with aesthetic reshaping. Performed in Istanbul specialist centres using open or closed technique under general anaesthesia, the procedure takes 2-3 hours. Addressing both breathing function and appearance in one session eliminates the need for separate operations.
- Functional rhinoplasty corrects breathing problems and aesthetic concerns in a single session.
- Deviated septum, turbinate hypertrophy and external appearance can all be addressed at once.
- Istanbul offers experienced surgeons and modern clinic facilities for this specialised procedure.
- Recovery allows return to social life in 10-14 days; final results stabilise at 12 months.
What is functional rhinoplasty?
Functional rhinoplasty is a surgical approach that simultaneously improves both the internal structure and external appearance of the nose. Unlike purely cosmetic rhinoplasty, the primary goal is to restore breathing function, with aesthetic improvement as a secondary gain. It is therefore recognised as a specialty spanning both ENT surgery and plastic surgery disciplines.
The most commonly treated conditions include: deviated septum (curvature of the nasal septum), inferior turbinate hypertrophy (abnormal enlargement of the nasal turbinates), and nasal valve insufficiency (narrowing of the nasal inlet). These three conditions frequently co-exist and must be addressed together to achieve adequate breathing.
Functional rhinoplasty is also performed in a revision context to correct adverse effects that a previous rhinoplasty has had on breathing. This specific situation is called 'revision functional rhinoplasty' and is technically more demanding.
Why Istanbul for functional rhinoplasty?
Istanbul is one of the highest-volume surgical centres globally, performing tens of thousands of rhinoplasty procedures per year. This volume allows surgeons to accumulate broad case experience rapidly. Turkey's medical faculties meet European standards for ENT specialty training, and many surgeons complete fellowship programmes in Europe or North America.
Practical advantages for international patients are also significant: easy entry with visa-free or e-visa access for many nationalities, international patient coordinator services, multilingual medical teams, and clinic protocols bundled with recovery accommodation packages. These factors make Istanbul the primary destination for patients from the Middle East, Europe and the CIS countries.
Surgical technique: open vs closed approach
In closed rhinoplasty all incisions remain inside the nose; no visible scar is left on the columella. In open rhinoplasty a small incision is made across the columella, nasal tissues are elevated and the surgeon accesses all structures under direct vision. In functional cases, especially complex nasal valve problems or severe septal deviations, the open approach is preferred because more precise technical corrections can be made.
Septoplasty (septal correction) and inferior turbinate reduction (inferior turbinoplasty or laser turbinate reduction) are the core components of functional rhinoplasty. When valve reconstruction is required, cartilage grafts are used; the most common graft sources are intranasal cartilage and auricular (ear) cartilage.
Recovery process: what to expect
In the first 48 hours after surgery, nasal packing or splints remain in place. During week one, swelling and bruising are expected; the patient can return to social life within 10-14 days. The nasal cast is typically removed at 7-10 days. The final shape has not been reached in the first three months; the majority of swelling subsides by month six. The full result is assessed at 12 months.
Breathing improvement is felt sooner than the aesthetic improvement: after packing removal, most patients report a noticeable increase in breathing quality. Mouth breathing may be necessary until nasal splints are removed; this is temporary.
Practical information for international patients
Our international patient protocol includes: pre-operative virtual consultation (video conference), in-person assessment on arrival in Istanbul, surgery, post-operative care and discharge. Follow-up after returning to your country is continued via remote video appointments.
A minimum 7-night stay in Istanbul after surgery is recommended; this period is necessary for post-operative check-ups. For guidance on the ideal waiting period before flying, please consult our dedicated recovery guide.
Veelgestelde vragen
- Is functional rhinoplasty covered by insurance?
- In Turkey, state health insurance (SGK) may cover functional components such as septoplasty and turbinate reduction when there is a medical indication. For foreign-national patients, coverage depends on your private insurance policy; our clinic provides the necessary medical reports.
- Can I have surgery purely to correct a breathing problem?
- Yes. Functional rhinoplasty can be performed solely to improve breathing function; aesthetic changes are not mandatory.
- How long do I need to stay in Istanbul after surgery?
- A minimum of 7 nights is recommended, preferably 10. The first check-up takes place 2 days after surgery and the second on day 7.
- Does closed-technique rhinoplasty leave a scar?
- In closed technique, incisions remain entirely inside the nose and no visible external scar is created. In open technique there may be a very small columella scar; it fades significantly over time.
- Can I combine functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty in one session?
- Yes, this is the standard approach. A single anaesthetic and single recovery period address both breathing and appearance simultaneously.
- Are the results permanent?
- Results of septoplasty and turbinate reduction are largely permanent. Nasal valve reconstruction also remains stable long-term. However, the nose changes gradually with ageing, which is a natural process.
